Where does the most important scholarship reside on platform companies, network effects, and double-sided markets? Analysis suggests that 12 academic institutions stand out. The first is Toulouse School of Economics due to the seminal work done by Jean Tirole and Jullien Bruno. Tirole won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2014. This is followed by Imperial College Business School (Gawer), Freeman School at Tulane (Parker) and BU’s School of Management (Van Alstyne). The most influential school has been MIT, where many of the top platform scholars were educated or taught.
