Kamel is the former founding dean of the school of business at the American University in Cairo. Before joining AUC, he was director of the Regional IT Institute (1992-2001). Prior to that, he managed the training department of the Cabinet of Egypt Information and Decision Support Center (1989-1992).
Kamel holds a PhD in information systems from London School of Economics and Political Science, an MBA and a BA in business administration from the American University in Cairo. His research and teaching interests include management of information technology, information technology transfer to developing nations, organizational transformation, electronic business, decision support systems and entrepreneurship. His work is published in IS and management journals and books. He is the editor of three books; E-strategies for technological diffusion and adoption: national ICT approaches for socioeconomic development (2010), Electronic business in developing countries: challenges and opportunities (2005) and Managing globally with information technology (2003). He serves as the associate editor of the Journal of IT for Development and the Journal of Cases on Information Technology.
Kamel is an Eisenhower Fellow and the Center for Global Enterprise Fellow. He is a member of the AACSB International Middle East Advisory Council; Egypt-US Business Council and board member of Education for Employment Egypt. Previously, he was a board member of the Egyptian American Enterprise Fund, executive vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce and member in the World Bank Knowledge Advisory Commission. He was a founding member of the Internet Society of Egypt. He was chairman of the Chevening Association in Egypt and board member of the Association of African Business Schools. He was member of the Eisenhower Fellowships Alumni Advisory Council; and vice president for communications and member of the Executive Council of the Information Resources Management Association.
He was a guest lecturer and taught degree and non-degree programs at Middlesex University, Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University), Maastricht School of Management, Claremont Graduate University, the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), American University, Carlton University, University of Ottawa and McMaster University. He was invited as panelist/speaker in a variety of policy issues, IS, management, development and leadership conferences and expert meetings including Asia-Middle East Dialogue, AACSB International, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, UNDP, World Summit on the Information Society, EFMD, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Atlantic Council, German Marshall Fund, Middle East Institute, International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Kamel won a number of organizational leadership award for serving the IT community from Conf-IRM, Canada, Cabinet of Egypt and IRMA, USA. He won the best paper award of the International Conference on Information Resources Management; the London School of Economics and Political Science Alumni Award; The American University in Cairo Distinguished Alumni Faculty Service Award; the UNDP National Human Resource Development Award; The American University in Cairo President’s Catalyst of Change Award for Citizenship and Service. Kamel is an advocate of diversity, empowerment, inclusion and using a bottom-up leadership approach.
