Steve Lohr Discusses Data-ism, The Next Phase for Big Data

August 24, 2015 | By Monica Debban

New York Times Technology reporter, Steve Lohr, led a compelling digital colloquium last week, the first in the CGE’s “Expert Connect” series, a new channel from the Global Scholar’s Program hosting experts from around the world to speak about the biggest management challenges and pressing business issues of the day.

Lohr spoke with Ira Sager, VP of the Center for Global Enterprise, about his new book Data-Ism: The Revolution Transforming Decision-Making, Consumer Behavior, and Almost Everything Else, a chronicle of the rise of Big Data, cutting-edge business strategies, and the powerful costs and benefits of a data driven world.  As Lohr sees it, “be guided by technology, not ruled by it.”

Lohr sees “Data-ism” as the next phase of Big Data, in which vast, Internet scale data sets are used for discovery, measurement and prediction in virtually every field, touching nearly every aspect of our professional and personal lives.  The individuals and companies entering this space, such as Cloudera’s Jeff Hammerbacher, General Electric’s William Ruh, and McKesson’s Donald Walker, are revolutionizing decision-making, leadership, and management by relying more on data and analysis and less on intuition and experience.

Which industries are at the forefront of “Big Data?”  How will they cope with exploitation, privacy, and management challenges? Does an MBA carry the same weight it used to and will companies look elsewhere to unlock talent in a data-centric world?  These questions – derived from a LIVE digital audience – and others were at the forefront of the discussion.  To learn more, watch the full presentation below or sign up for the Global Scholars program to join future Expert Connects.
